Mel Martinez, who served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development before representing Florida in the U.S. Senate, is backing the nomination of physician Ben Carson to become HUD secretary.
Martinez and three other former HUD secretaries sent a letter to leaders of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee to urge confirmation of Carson, whose nomination by President-elect Donald Trump has been controversial. The controversy has stemmed, in part, from Carson’s lack of experience with housing issues.
The letter, released by Trump’s team, was also signed by Henry Cisneros, Alphonso Jackson and Steven Preston.
“As secretary, we know that Dr. Carson will learn about what works, develop new innovations, measure outcomes, and achieve real results to improve communities throughout America,” the letter said.
